THINK FIRST

Not many people ever hit anything shooting from the hip; I only shoot from the shoulder. This means I'm direct. I don't like students being late for classes.

'Out There' -  if you're late, you're dead.

Don't be late.

I grew up in a place where deadly violence was considered ordinary; an everyday occurence. The threat of deadly violence was a continuous presence and very often happened nightly. Everyone I knew carried firearms from pistols to submachine guns.

Abductions, bombings, murders, burnings, rapes and assasinations happened daily to innocent civilians. These are the terrible consequences of war.

It happens daily now; just not here.

When I first started teaching more than twenty five years ago, I realised it came with a significant responsibility. If I didn't carry out my duties properly and somebody I instructed ended up harmed (or worse) because of my own failure to instruct effectively, then I would have to live with that for the rest of my life.

I never liked the thought of that, which is why I do what I do properly.

You will find me a very correct teacher; sometimes humorous but always correct. I am not there to waste my time. I am there to train you properly so that you can act effectively to protect your life or the life of someone you care about. There is no other reason for a civilian to engage in violence.

Remember that.

Please do not ask me to teach you if you do not want to learn. Please do not ask me to teach you if you are looking to become tough or hardened.

No one is. It is just an illusion. The body is extremely fragile to someone who knows what they are doing.

One of the cornerstones of my teaching is that fear is derived from the shame of feeling vulnerable.

It is absolutely alright to be vulnerable. It is just fine. We all are.

I teach methods of self defence that do not escalate; they explode ... and then they stop.

I am careful who I teach and consider it carefully before I do so.

I am not interested in teaching people with attitude problems.
